Esmail Qaani Under Guard and Questioned

Esmail Qaani, the leader of Iran's elite Quds Force, is alive and unhurt but under guard and being questioned as Iran investigates major security breaches ¹. Qaani's detention comes after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a massive air strike on Beirut on September 27. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is probing how Israel penetrated the Lebanese movement's senior leadership and identified Nasrallah's location.

Investigations and Suspensions

Iran's investigations have focused on the final movements of Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, a Quds Force commander killed alongside Nasrallah. Nilforoushan oversaw operations in Syria and Lebanon after his predecessor's death in an Israeli strike in April. Sources close to Hezbollah revealed that Nasrallah returned to Beirut's southern suburbs to meet with Nilforoushan and other leaders, where the strike occurred.

Security Breach and Infiltration Fears

The Iranians suspect that the Israelis have infiltrated the IRGC, particularly those working in Lebanon. This fear intensified after the assassination of Hamas' political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran in July. The IRGC is investigating the extent of the breach and its source, with signs pointing to the Revolutionary Guard.

*Qaani's Whereabouts and Status

Qaani's location is unclear, with eight sources claiming he is in Tehran and another stating he remains in Beirut. Lebanese and Iraqi sources describe Qaani as being "under house arrest" and undergoing questioning supervised by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Consequences and Repercussions

The breach has significant implications for Iran's security forces and the Axis of Resistance alliance. The investigations' outcome will likely impact Iran's military strategy and internal power dynamics. As tensions rise, the region remains on high alert, awaiting the consequences of Qaani's detention and the ongoing investigations.
