The Los Angeles Dodgers punched their ticket to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) with a 2-0 shutout win over the San Diego Padres in Game 5 of the NLDS. Kiké Hernandez's clutch home run and Yoshinobu Yamamoto's impressive outing propelled the Dodgers to their first NLCS appearance since 2020.
Historic Pitching Duel
Yamamoto, 26, made history as the fifth rookie to start a winner-take-all game for the Dodgers. He outdueled veteran Yu Darvish, allowing just two hits over five innings. The matchup marked the first time two Japanese-born starters faced off in MLB playoff history.
Hernandez's Homer Sparks Dodgers
Kiké Hernandez's second-inning home run gave the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead. Teoscar Hernandez added an insurance run with a seventh-inning homer, chasing Darvish from the game.
Padres' Bats Go Cold
San Diego's potent offense was silenced, with Luis Arraez, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jurickson Profar, and Manny Machado combining for just one hit in 14 at-bats. The Padres failed to score over the final 24 innings of the series.
Post-Game Controversy
Kiké Hernandez sparked controversy during a live post-game interview, using profanity to describe the team's mindset. The moment quickly went viral on social media.
NLCS Awaits
The Dodgers will host the New York Mets in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night. Shohei Ohtani, who struggled in the series, will look to bounce back against the Mets.
